Painting old plastered walls

Hi

I’ve just stripped a room back to the plaster finish. I have sugar soaped and filled in cracks etc so getting close to painting. Do I treat old plastered walls same as new in that apply a mist coat first or not? Also a small area has a bit of damp from an issue since resolved so I thought best to use damp seal paint on that area first, so would I apply that first, then a mist coat (if required) or mist coat first then damp seal on top? Any advice much appreciated

If the cause of the damp is now resolved, it would be better to let it dry out first before sealing and painting. Not doing so would surely trap the moisture in the wall and damage the finish you're hoping for when painting over.

As for the approach to painting the wall, old plaster doesn't need a mist coat if it has already been painted in the past.The old paint would have been absorbed into the plaster making it much less absorbent. How large are the filled areas? It might be worth testing on a small area with the emulsion first.
