Hi, Can anyone please advise me of the best paint brushes to buy that are not too expensive. I have spent a lot of time preparing woodwork, skirting boards, doors etc., and the brushes I am using at the moment are tending to leave brush lines which I don't much care for and is spoiling the look and my hard work. I am using good quality gloss paint and I don't think I have put it on too thick or too thin. I have had a look at the local Wickes but am not sure what to buy. Thank you for any help.

You wont get decent brushes at Wickes, you need to go to a decorating centre, ie Brewers, Crown Decorators Centre, Johnstones or Dulux Decorating Centre.

How many times do you have to mention being a 'Professional Painter and Decorator for 33 years'?

The OP doesn't sound like a pro and was looking for some reasonable priced, but decent brushes. Wilko's best brushes, the red and black handled ones are both good quality and quite reasonably priced. I do though agree that a lot of what they sell are rubbish.

Is it a crime to do that then - I havent spammed with a website or anything, just pointing I have been in the trade a long time so anyone needing any advice I will try and gladly help.

Gentlemen, I really appreciated your comments about the various brushes. I bought both and have found each has it's own benefits. From the Dulux Decorator Centre I bought one of their 1.5" and from Wilkos bought a pack of various sizes. The 2" Wilko brush (red and black) is very good. For me, as I have arthritic hands, it is a light thinner brush and good for large areas as it is easy on my hands. It does give a good finish. The 1.5" from the Decorator Centre gives an equally good finish and is ideal, for me anyway, for smaller areas e.g. round window frames. I expect the life expectancy is different for each brush but both have produced a good finish. Thank you both, I appreciate your help with this - I just have to finish the room now!

Glad you found a brush you like and good luck with your project :)

I rate the Wilko's brushes as well. Cheap enough to throw away but good enough for a reasonable finish. Oh and if you want a reasonable finish don't use that s***e water based paint.
