Help with installing new light arranging wires in connector block

My friend has tried installing a new light and has removed the ceiling rose without taking picture of the wires. I am going to have a look for him tomorrow but hes sent me a picture of his worrying attempt which as you can tell with arrangement has tripped his circuit. I have attached picture if someone could direct me what goes where so I can pop round tomorrow and sort.

Suggest you give your friend some plastic cutlery as he obviously shouldn't be allowed metal tools.

It isn't possible from a forum.

You need to determine which is the supply cable,
which is the cable that goes to the switch, and
what the other cables do.

One presumably continues the circuit to other rooms.

Does that leave another two?
Is there another light that operates with this one, or another two.

How are we supposed to know?

When “you pop round” don’t forget to take your two-probe voltage tester or a multimeter.

Either that, or the telephone number of a local electrician.

And take some earth sleeving too.

Basically it's Plan A or Plan B for you and/or your friend.


PLAN A:

• Learn how lighting circuits are wired.

• Get a multimeter and learn how to use it.
• Identify which conductors are which at the switches and the light positions.
• Work out what should go where and connect everything up properly.

PLAN B:

• Get an electrician.

If anybody tries to tell you that there is in effect a Plan C, which is to start trying different things without really knowing what's going on, hoping to get it working by luck, or by blindly following instructions to put-this-wire-in-that-hole without any idea as to why, please don't listen to them - you must know what, and truly understand what, you are doing.

Electrical-installation-by-guesswork is a foolish idea.

OH MY GOD! Ignoring the rest of the catastrophe what on earth are all the wire links for?!

This has to be one of the poorest attempts at wiring a light fitting I have seen in the 16 years I have worked as an electrician.

That was also my first reaction. However, on looking more carefully, I came to the conclusion that probably all (certainly most) of what initially appeared to be 'links' were, in fact, conductors that had been bent into a U-turn close to where the entered a terminal (in most cases behind the block).
