The result is that I have a lovely functioning light and have learnt loads about wiring - thanks to both of you.

Maybe I had a loose connection the first time around - so you are both probably correct.

If the Live/Switched live had been swapped over, then the instructions to join the three red wires was then correct, but the photo was still wrong.

Exactly, and as its typically expected practice to use the red core as the live feed to the switch, and the black as the returned switched live, that is that. A switch is just a switch, it makes and breaks, totally un fussed which way the current is flowing (and its ac, anyway...)
