Support roof over door opening

Anyway, two 6 or 7 x4's, and the rafters on hangers or a ledger to reduce the height by whatever the rafter depth is.
Is the 2" of the door frame part of this structure? If not, do you think I could site the two 6x4s [edit - I mean 6x2s] behind it, on the top of the pillar built each side of the opening?

You could do that no problem
Thanks. In that case, how does that differ from glueing and screwing 2no 4x2s above, and to the header of the door casing? Sorry if I'm being thick, but don't both result in a 6x4 beam?

You can't make up a beam height by fixing together, but you can make up the width. That's because the stress vertically between the strips is bending so would shear the strips whereas across the width they should be working in tandem almost independently.
