Sky TV Signal

Can anyone help me understand how the Sky Signal works, recently I have had the message that the sky box is not receiving a signal although a couple of days ago it came through pixulated.
Checking the angle of the dish to the end of the garden I noticed the trees have come into leaf and could appear to be obscuring the signal, one in particular, I intend to lop off the top of this tree, this would leave a clear sight line to the dish , however I wonder if the signal covers a wide area meaning that I would have to do the same with several other trees, how far do I have to go ?

The signal from the satellite covers several thousand square miles of the Earth. Your dish has to be able to see the satellite. The diameter of the sight cone to the satellite from the dish is the same as the diameter of the dish. Only those things ( foliage etc ) which block that sight cone need to be removed

Also, bear in mind that the concave dish is a mirror for the signals. So, don't visualise where the dish is pointing as such, like...



...you need to visualise the angle as a beam bouncing off the dish to the LNB, to figure out what is causing the obstruction...

Thanks for that, UP it is what I thought was the problem the tree has grown in the last few weeks and has increased its leaf spread , so hopefully if I Chop it back that should be the answer ( I`m a lumberjack and I`m OK )
