imagine the database is exposed via a hack...

Select name, address, location_date, photo
from hacked_database_table
where location_postcode = "<well known brothel>"
and Marital_status ="Married"
and employment_status = "Employed"

then mail merge the following:

Dear <name>
<address>

On <Location_date> you were seen being a naughty boy, as per <photo> to prevent Mrs <name> being told, please pay 10 bit coins in to account <4359regdfs4t3> within 7 days.

I can think of millions of other examples.

with 10 bitcoins per hit, I can probably afford to run my stolen db on an Exadata. :D

Indeed...me too....Mr road rage lunatic takes your pic and finds where you live..not to mention mistaken identity...list is endless

People can find out where you live, hack accounts and police can mistakenly or wrongly identify villains with or without FR. Why are people making a fuss? Crooks will use whatever tech is available. FR is unlikely to be any better than the tools they have now.

I'm not at all bovvered.

Finding where someone lives is so very easy, there are lots of sources - all you need is a name.

@noseall - I'm not particularly concerned either, but I think the bit you are missing is not that it can be done, but it enables mass automation of the process. We also have possible expansion in to civil applications. Generally it is a concern when personal data is collected by automated processes and without consent.

A bit late for that, it is already being done and the information used. Your spending habits are tracked, your movement habits are tracked via your phone, your vehicle use is tracked by APRS. Ads on the internet are targeted specifically at you based on that information.

So what's new?

In the US 5 law makers were incorrectly identified as criminals. Facial Recognition and mass surveilance will be abused.

The argument you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear doesn't hold. A person attends a rally be it far right or left and now they are tagged with that political leaning when they simply could have been going to find out more or protest against it.

It can become more insidious, if you are mistakenly tagged as being someone - you have to prove your innocence with ID. The "where are your papers" scenario to prove your innocence.

or 5 "taps" to the head because you were flagged as a terrorist.

That's an interesting point. I have been in London with my wife several times in the last few years where we have been caught up in political demonstrations that we were not participating in. I wonder if they were using facial recognition then.

Our photos and information has been logged via passport control at Heathrow on several occasions so I guess they are able to link that information to the facial recognition database.
