Hi,

This is in regard to getting a suitable match for a currently eggshell finished T+G timber door.

The catch is the colour RAL 9007 aluminium grey is a metallic.

Anyone experienced the likes of this, what would be the best way to try and match it? My local suppliers can’t seem to scan it nor mix the colour.

As it is a metallic finish, I suspect that the door needs to be sprayed rather than hand painted.

You should be able to find a local car paint shop that is able to mix you a spray tin of cellulose (or find one online). That however will only be suitable if you are trying to touch in spots.

If you want to repaint the whole door you will need to buy the paint in liquid form as either cellulose or 2K, and then use a compressor/HVLP/airless sprayer set up.

eg https://shop.martinbrownpaints.com/martin-brown-paints/ral-9007-paint

BTW 2K paints should not be used without proper air fed masks and many 2K paints lack UV inhibitors and shouldn't be used outdoors.

Unless you have the requisite kit it might make sense to pay someone to do it for you. Sorry.

Many thanks for that.

Spraying was crossing my mind but as you say 2K car type paint so not ideal.

On the Hormann swatch the colour doesn’t look particularly metallic, I would say the effect is more in the sheen/look of it. The house door is nearly 3m from the two garage doors so I’m thinking I might be best to try and match it the best I can from a paint swatch card.

Hopefully that may work ok. Can obviously try it for matching first.

Just get your local decorators' merchant to scan the Hormann swatch for the best match.

Unfortunately two are telling me it won’t scan due to the metallic. Here’s a picture of it. It’s only when you look really really closely you can see it is a metallic, it generally just looks like a mid/gunmetal grey.
