Hello everyone,

Since we had the continuous rain at the beginning of the month, I have had a damp patch appear on the wall. On inspection of the wall outside, there is a wedge of wood between the brickwork which is in the same place as the damp. Could this be the cause of the damp patch and what can I do to remedy it? And why is the wood there in the first place????
Thank you

Take a pic that shows the gutter and downpipe.

The wooden wedge you show may have been for a downpipe.

How old are the windows?

The windows are fairly newish I think and there is no guttering above or near the window... It’s the downstairs window.

I would guess the flashing around the base of chimney on high side is loose or missing [looks to have been dislodged], rain will collect here and run down thru brickwork, or cascade down the wall, its also directly above the window, could also be poor window frame seal.

Thanks Foxhole :) How would I go about mending the flashing? And why and how would the running water from the flaashing enter the wall at this point as oppose to any other point?

As I said could be poor frame fitting, but water always finds the easiest course , a leak above a ceiling on one side of the house can track across the house and appear in a completely different spot.A roofer who does lead work should be able to sort it.

Yes, it does look ragged. But I see the bathroom is above the room with the watermark so there might be a plumbing leak or overflowing bath.

Are all flues in the chimney ventilated top and bottom?

Lead flashing needs to be professionally done, some roofers use a specialist lead worker.

There are also paint, sealants, tapes and mortar remedies. All are useless.

Hmmmm hoping it’s more likely to be the rain from the flashing as it appeared after all the rain we had the beginning of the month...Thank you very much for all your advice!

the pointing is in a very poor, crumbling and porous condition.
the wood plug can be easily removed.
the gable wall could be a solid 9" wall.
moisture could penetrate to the room in your pic?
why not measure your wall at any opening?

there will be a chimney breast to the side of or in the next room to the damp stains.

Sorry can you explain a bit more please. Are you saying it’s unlikely the moisture is penetrating via the wooden plug as the wall is solid?
And yes, there is a chimney breast directly to the right of the damp patch - could it be rain coming down chimney breast even though there are no signs of damp on or under the fire place?
Sorry I have no experience in diy whatsoever!

Rain can come down the chimney and dries out with ventilation , but if the chimney breast is sealed up without ventilation and the chimney left uncapped you get damp .

poor pointing can allow water to penetrate the wall.
the wood plug is irrelevant.
solid walls allow the penetration of damp to the inside of the building more easily than cavity walls.
please measure the wall?
will you post pics of the chimney breast in the room with the damp, and the room above.
