I've had to put a fog bulb in but when putting the plastic spring bolt back in, it fell in to the bottom of the void. I couldn't be bothered to take all the trims off to retrieve it so I went to the local hardware, got a long coach bolt.

On to the bolt, first a nut, then a spring washer, then a flat washer, then a fibre washer to check up to the panel. With the lamp unit in place, bolt through and screwed into lamp then nut screwed up to the washers and tightened lightly with a 13mm spanner.

I my opinion, my system is better than the VW plastic spring bolt which somewhat knacks your fingers.

I've put the 13mm spanner in the tyre tray for future light bulb changes.

Does the job but looks ****e

Its hidden behind carpet tab so looks aren't really a factor. To retrieve the fastener bolt means taking a lot of trim off.
Nut loosened with the spanner and the bolt spins out easily, a lot easier the spring loaded fastener bolt I dropped.
Everyone has their preference.
