Well, the plot thickens!

I plunged it and then ran the taps for 5 mins.

now; the manhole cover in my garden is overflowing!

I know that with Wessex water, shared lines, even when on your property are the water boards responsibility. So I called to get them out.

they said that in my property, it looks like the manhole cover in my garden is shared “surface run off” and not shared “foul”

I thought both my waste water AND my foul were under that cover.

He said in newer properties they are combined but as mine is older (30s) there is a surface water line for our properties in my terrace AND a foul line (which I don’t have a manhole for)

Weird thing is, my manhole cover ONLY floods when it’s MY water. My neighbours baths etc are not flooding it. If it’s a shared surface run off line, if it’s blocked surely that would flood when they use it.

upshot is they are going to look at it anyway.

I am gutted that they only cover the foul line. I was under the impression anything shared is water board

???? I thought older properties are shared - newer separate - and newest rainwater goes to soakaways . Anyway, keep us posted.

Baths aren't surface water. Rainwater is surface water.

You should of gave them a donation of £20 to pay for their breakfast tomorrow morning, I'm sure they would of checked the overflowing manhole with a jetter.

Right. So the guy on the phone didn’t know his proverbial from his elbow.

I have a single combined drain for both sewage, surface and waste water.

My wife is vietnamese and so is her mum who is staying while we have our young baby.

the sewer was blocked. Full of baby wipes. Of which I naturally knew to put in the bin.

Their toilets can cope with this, in their flats (they are city slickers not village dwellers!)

So the mystery is solved. WAter board didn’t change me. I also now know how my sewage and plumbing works and have gained some man-knowledge.

...and that knowledge is I should have married an English girl!

sadly, once you’ve had noodles you’ll never go back to meat pie

OP,
you have a baby.
you have contaminated water swilling around your yard, and bursting a manhole.
unprotected, you have been reaching into a contaminated gulley.
you should stop now & call in a local plumber who clears drains.

the water board guy cleaned it for me. I just sat and watched.

“water board didn’t charge me” should have read above.

The worst I’ve done is stuck my hand down a gully in a bin bag and then washed my hands.

no need to say anything more - you've got four likeable stooges who delight in that kind of thing.

just saying but "political correctness " means something way out of whatever it is you are trying to say - check out the definition. learn something, be on a roll.
although, i doubt that any definition will show a link between hepatitis & PC.

Have to beg to differ, no sewer I know of will cope with wipes, they are the Devil's work when it comes to drains. (Although they do keep some of us in a living.)

Some wipes have now been designated 'Fine to flush' as they will break down in the system, anything that isn't marked as such needs to go straight in the bin!
