A BBC documentary last night claimed ministers counted every glove individually instead of in pairs to boast of delivering one billion bits of PPE to NHS staff frontline - as yet another minister suffered a shambolic round of interviews today.

The Panorama investigation said Number 10 had failed to procure enough protective equipment, such as masks, gowns and visors.

It also accused ministers of counting 547million gloves individually, instead of as 273.5million pairs, to fiddle PPE numbers.

The one billion figure also included items which are not considered PPE, including millions of cleaning products, waste bags, detergents and paper towels.

I thought gloves were counted in singles but then is it a bit underhand to say billion of equipment when it was something like 887m pieces and then double counting for the gloves - unles there are a lot of prostate exams happening!

Manufacturing capacity can only reach a maximum output level and it can often be affected obtaining the relevant raw materials when demand is so high.

By all means order 500 million gloves, be prepared to wait in the queue.

Happens all the time, give the figures that sound good. A billion gloves sounds better than 500 million pairs of gloves.

Percentages can sound fantastic when crime in your increased 200%. If originally there were 3 incidents, now saying 6 isn't alarming.

If you want to vote for a party that doesn't do this, put your voting card in the bin.

Ok, but that is not how they are sold.

It might not be the same in the health service but when I use them, I tend to use more on my right hand than the left so maybe they should be sold as 33 triples. That's why Conny has one left over.

Exactly, the gloves aren't even 'handed'. The Panorama team should have saved some of our licence fee and announced what a great job the Govt are doing, because if this is the most damning thing they can come up with, well, really.

You wouldn't be saying that if you had a loved one who has to reuse infected equipment or not use substandard equipment - bin bags anyone?

Oh come on be fair, we're talking about how gloves are counted.

no, its highlighting the govts dishonest use of a headline figure detached from any context.

here it is in context:

500,000 the PPE of the Tories claim success for are gloves Counted each glove as 1 PPE item
Gloves come 100 in pack, that's 50 pairs
That's 2500 boxes of gloves
Roughly 220 acute care capable English NHS hospitals
About 11 boxes per hospital

why didnt Matt Hancock say "we've got enough gloves for 11 boxes per hospital"

I think you may need to check your maths there.

Because he's a 'half glass full' rather than a 'half glass empty' kind of guy?
