Government declined ‘game-changing’ US-approved coronavirus saliva tests

The so-called “next-gen” saliva test was developed in just 10 days earlier this year by Curative, which is run by 25-year-old Fred Turner, who won the EU’s contest for young scientists in 2013.

The Yorkshire-born scientist was named UK young engineer of the year in the same year when, aged 17, he built a DNA machine from his bedroom to discover whether he had the “ginger gene”, after merciless teasing from his schoolmates about why his brother had red hair and he had brown hair. He turned his focus to the coronavirus when the pandemic took hold in January.

The FDA seem to be satisfied with the accuracy. The FDA document is full of technical terms but they seem to accept the evidence provided that it's effective. They do use the term Authorized a lot but I don't know if there's a difference between that and approved in this context.

It sounds like someone failed to read the proposal in detail and mistook a saliva swab for a nasal scrape.

Where did you get that from - I want real proof. As he was acting as a civil servant he may have filtered the findings. There was some one else with him, probably to make sure he didn't get lost on the way or spend too much time updating his blog. Can't remember his name, wish I'd made a note now.

Your more recent post mentioned him pushing herd immunity as well. Denied obviously. The one you are looking at makes him look like a great bloke. So of the 2 if you were gov which one would you back? Thank heavens your not.

Anyway testing. Capacity yesterday quick mutter 72,000 - number done - way way way less. Total number of tests to date - large number, sounds good but mostly irrelevant.

All it is about really is preparing for the blame game and avoiding the fact that due largely to Tory policy the NHS wasn't in a state to cope. Blare didn't do much either but at least he made the pay scales more attractive

The number is going in the right direction. Harping on at the government for failing to hit it isn't very useful. Nor is pointing out we should have been driving this number up to 100k a day during February, even if it is true.

That it seems there is ongoing failure to identify potential suppliers for testing kits, as there was for PPE, is more concerning. If we're still missing opportunities to make things better how many more will we miss?

Doesn't alter the fact though does it, that he called for an earlier shut down.
Was he on side with not locking down before that or are you basing that on popular left wing press stories that have refuted at the highest level of Government, the ones where he allegedly was happy for old people to die.

Those claims were in the Times. Not typically a left wing rag. They were also in your Bloomberg article. That he might have been on the right side at that time doesn't mean he wasn't wrong earlier.

Refuted is also the wrong term. That requires proof, which has not been provided. You meant rejected.
