Cutting attic door into insulated plasterboard

We are in the process of replacing a plasterboard ceiling with new insulated plasterboard. Roughly 65mm thickness

a new access hatch is required to be cut but cant see how this is possible with the thickness of the new board

Any advice.

Suggest you consider using timber packers?

Fix a [say] 50.mm.Square timber to the outside face of the hatch joist, that is on the opposite side to where the hatch will be formed, you can then fix the new plasterboard to the 50.mm.Square timber

Attached to the underside of the same joist, fit a strap of timber same thickness as the new + old plasterboard, this strap is to allow you to get a decent fixing for any ply [or similar] finishing to the inside [opening] face of the new hatch, the same strap will allow you to fix the facing [architrave] to finish of the hatch on the "seen" side of the hatch.

If you have a hatch, it sounds like there is a large loft void?

It would be more usual to insulate above with loft roll, which would be far cheaper than insulation backed plasterboard. Also 52mm of PIR / PUR on its own is not enough to meet regulations.

The room had coving fitted around it originally. When we ripped the ceiling down the coving was covering a gap between the wall and the ceiling.

we need to cover the gap so was thinking of using thick insulated plasterboard which would kill two birds so to speak.

It’s not an attic, just a smallish void where the soil pipe runs through and other services. As we are a converted bungalow we don’t have any storage space so want to make use of that void.

the hatch will be a new install
