After googling how to fix a squeeky chair I sprayed wd40 on most moving part on my chair and the next day Houston is acting up. When I sit down it dips to a certain height and acts funny when i try to use height adjustment, sometimes getting stuck and sometimes making an awful noise. Is this unusual? There were multiple sources saying wd40 is safe wherever. How di I fix this?

Nothing to do with wd40 , probably have an oil leak on the piston so not consumer repairable.
WD40 is not a lubricant. It’s a Water Dispersal agent. They tried numerous formula's and the 40th formula they tried worked the best. Hence the name.
So manufacturers of wd40 wrongly describe their product as a lubricant?
The original WD40 is a water dispersal product and that’s where it’s name came from. There’s also the WD40 Brand. They make various WD40 branded products for specific use. I have a can of WD40 silicon lube - it’s not a water dispersal agent.
It's a rubbish lubricant is what it is.
It's a mighty coincidence the day after he squidges a load of that crappy stuff in there it starts acting up don't you think?
What I wanna know is is it still squeaking?

Although you describe the moving part as a piston, some moving parts on chairs are actually sleeves on a rod, using friction as the resistance.
I think plumbers used to have a can of something that remained sticky, no idea what it was called. This might be the answer.

WD40 also contains a solvent, so I wonder if the (presumably gas) strut used in the chair has had its' seals attacked/damaged by using WD40 in it.
And AFAIK it isn't a lubricant in any conventional sense because it evaporates off too quickly. Don't lubricants work by filling in the rough areas in a mating or sliding area and therefore reducing friction.

The propellant evaporates off not the oil carried in it .

What to do? Replace the gas strut if the existing one is kaput. Happy? One supplier is Dictator who can make any size/rating of gas strut you desire
