Side of the house has a path, and, mini retaining wall. The wall is 20cm tall, the ground behind a gradual slope leading 6.5m uphill towards the boundary. The incline gradually increases less than 1m. The wall is 12 m long.

Excuse the pic, only one I have of the wall

We thought that removing the wall and slope, and build a new retaining wall further back would reclaim a lot of side garden. Even moving it back 4m would yield 48m of flat ground.

Simple eh? Dig it out, get a builder to lay a foundation, use mortarless retaining wall blocks, like terraforce or tobermore and its a DIY'able job. They provide structural design advice, and, tbe new wall would be less than 1m high so not too concered.

I then used the line search website and found that there's a huge mess of gas network supply pipes there.

I've used my fat thumb to draw the current wall on the map.

According to that key, I have 4 supply pipes crossing the boundary, 4 pig traps and a circuit of medium pressure pipes in the area I'd like excavated. Some of it is under the existing path althouh theres a big circuit leading uphill. The depth in the road looks like 0.8m, so, almost certainly digging will expose the pipes.

I emailed back the gas network with questions, although, havent had a response.

This no longer looks like an easy job.

It looks like the house is connected to the main on the right hand corner, and, everything in the way, and gas supplies crossing the boundary are ??? Redundancies?

1) Does this number of supplies and traps look normal? I cannot see any other house of the map with this level of complication.

2) Can I get the offending pipes moved so I can excavate?

3) Is this likely going to be prohibitively expensive?

4) Surely this is fairly common (gas supplies in the way when wanting to do work) - has anyone had anything similar before, if so, how did you resolve it and how expensive was it

Thank you for your thoughts

I would not trust that map for starters , more often than not it's out of date or just plain wrong you will have to dig some test pits and see what's there

Balls. Thats going to be a lot of hand excavating.

Lets say some or all are found.

Anyone had this before? What's the procedure / costs to reroute/remove?

I would suggest that the blue line and triangles are almost certainly not gas pipes, they are notations for dimensions on the map.

The red lines are the gas mains and looking at that map it would seem that there are no service pipes shown ( service pipe is from main to house )

I doubt you will find any , crack on and get digging

You are correct! Small print in the email with the plans says they dont show supply pipes.

I did some more digging (pun intended) and it looks like they'll move a supply pipe:

"This estimate is for:
  • A gas service alteration
  • At your property in the south of England (outside M25)
If you dig the necessary trenches
The estimated cost of this work is usually in the region of £418 to £533 + VAT

If SGN digs the necessary trenches
The estimated cost of this work is usually in the region of £644 to £759 + VAT"
