Hello Guys

Back again with a query / problem with the old Girl

It’s a Nissan X Trail 08 plate with 91k on the clock
Brief summary of the problem
Whilst on a drive out to the in-laws
On the Motorway doing 70-80 mph the cruise control light starts to flash and the Engine goes into a limp mode scenario ie Car generally has no guts & won’t rev out , so I carry on a get to
the in-laws and look forward to a slow drive Home btw no warning lights showing on the dash

Get back in & fire her up , it’s cleared all hunky dory , but the limp mode scenario keeps returning spasmodically even without using the Cruise Control ? But now I’ve got an Engine problem light on

I had the Car into the local independent Garage & he hooked it up to the Reader , There was a DPF code & an exhaust pressure sensor code , plus it said a Software update is required , they’ve cleared the Coded etc and the Light is now off , so
I drove Home , got a 100 yards and realised we were back in limp mode ( they hadn’t test drove it !!! ) returned a told him , I switched off waiting for them to have a look then restarted it .... and it had cleared again??? Full Revs again!!!

My Independent has advised I get the Software update sorted , and take it from there , spoke to Nissan and they didn’t fill me confidence in knowing what this update was , and I’m now awaiting a call from the Service update

..... does anybody on here know ???

Sorry it’s a bit of a long post , but just trying to fill you in , so to speak

thanks

Phil

Sorry I have no knowledge of software updates for these but presumably the car was running well enough before this episode?
Anyway, sensors are detecting a pressure difference after the DPF which has to indicate the thing is starting to block up.
I’d guess you were using the cruise control when this happened, the lamp started flashing because the engine couldn’t maintain the speed.
John :)

Hi John

Thanks for responding , yes it was running fine before it went into limp mode , no excessive smoke etc , the annoying thing is , that it’s here and there , one minute no Guts , then switch off and usually fine after switching back on , I was expecting a call from the Service desk at the Main agents .... but still waiting !!!
I’ll keep you updated

thanks
Phil

So , called in at Nissan , after no return call £120+Vat to do the update can’t do it for at least 10
Days , so I guess I’m taking a chance on not having a slow drive to
Mid Wales

cheers

So it’s Holiday time , sat in a Cabin in Wales watching it rain ☔

The problem is still there intermittently, if when starting up I can get the Motor to rev over 3000rpm things are fine for a while , but sometimes it will dip back to 300rpm Max , it’s an Auto box with the option of manual change , if I keep it reviving around 2500-3000rpm using the manual side of the Box it seems to run ok , still no problems with misfire or lights on the dash

On my return Home I’m considering getting in one of those Co’s that clean out the DPF on the drive so to speak , John do you think this would be a good starter point ???

Cheers
Phil

In my limited experience Phil, I didn’t have any success with chemical cleaners and had to replace the DPF (that was on a VW) but its worth a try.
Did Nissan give you any clue whether the update was necessary?
John :)

Hi John ,they were going to let me know , but not got back to me I’ve found things seem to be better generally if I keep the Revs up when driving around 3,000rpm , just travelled 40 odd miles without a problem bar the Engine Management Light now being on

we’ll see what happens

thanks

Quick update , still working occasionally and then limping along , so I’ve decided to go down this route -

Thursday next , Car will be at the DPF Doctors for a full DPF clean and check over , decided on this after my Guy at the Garage said that after market DPF’s weren’t as good as the original fitted item ? - cost £300 inc warranty (?)

Then Friday into the Main Agents for the Software update , when booking in they couldn’t enlighten me what the Update did , but I’ll be asking what my £120+vat will give me

so fingers crossed we might some improvements by the end of the week

cheers

Crazy.....if the main dealers can’t explain what the update could achieve, what chance have we?
Looking forward to hearing the outcome, and thanks for the update!
John :)

Wouldn't consulting a Nissan-specific forum be a good idea here ? Very likely to have some Nissan mechanics contributing who ought to know about the update.

Hi all

well after a bit of being messed around by the Garage , we seem to have a result , all running fine now

I dropped the Car off at this back Street Garage , had a chat with the Mechanics , they explained what they do with the Cleaning Machine , and said the Car would be ready later that day .... it wasn’t ! It needed a DPF pressure sensor , it would be in 1st thing in the Morning , wrong part Ordered / Supplied etc from the Factors so that had to be reordered , then the Reader said it would also need the Exhaust Pressure Sensor replacing and they’d forgotten to check availability with the Main agent ! , they seemed to know what they were doing , but the communication skills were minus 10

Coupled that with leaving the Air box (?) loose causing the Engine to sound like the Exhaust was leaking with a booming sound , back again and refitted properly

And now there’s no reader notifications for the ‘Software Upgrade’ which Nissan never came back to me with details , so that £120+vat appointment has been cancelled

So it ended with £300 for the DPF clean
£161 for the Exhaust Sensor &
£60 for the DPF Sensor

I’ve had it out & about in it putting on 250+ miles and all seems fine , fingers crossed

Thanks for input Guys

Phil

At last, a positive result, Phil (y)
Just wondering if the sensors were damaged when removing them - they can be ferociously tight.
Can I ask how much warranty is given with the DPF clean?
John :)

The Warranty appears to be very flexible , they said it was 6 months, but like most warranties there’s lots of wriggle room to get out of them

at least the Cars running very well , hopefully for a good while, the Cars a keeper , it’s an 08 Plate with 91k on the clock very nice condition, I’d lose money on it , so it’s going to be here for a good while

thanks for your input again John

regards
Phil
