Hi - I "think" that I have an issue with the Honeywell 3 way valve but need a bit of advice please.

Hot water on, turns on pump and boiler - I get hot water.
CH on, nothing happens. the pump doesn't run, and the Honeywell valve makes no noise whatsoever.

Does this mean that the Honeywell unit needs replacing?

The Honeywell valve when at rest sits, in the hot water only position where it is held by a spring. So the hot water will work fine. If the valve motor is faulty, it will not wind across to the central heating position and trigger the microswitch that starts the boiler and pump. So a faulty motor, or stuck valve could be the issue.

Can you slide the manual lever at the side of the valve from 'Auto' to 'Man' and back again? If the valve is stuck this could free it off. You will feel some resistance when moving it to 'Man' because operating the lever also spins the motor.

However, there are other things that could cause the same symptoms. The programmer, or room thermostat may be faulty (or if applicable need a new battery) and so they might not be telling the motorised valve to move to the central heating position. If you have a multimeter and can use it safely, check for a live on the motorised valve's white wire. if it's present, then the programmer and room thermostat are doing their bit.

Thank you. I ran through your tests and it was indeed the Honeywell at fault. Strange thing is, I only replaced this one 6 months ago, so I was surprised it failed so quickly.

thanks for your help.

If the new Honeywell valve has failed that quickly I'd be looking for a reason why, or you might find the next one going the same way. They are normally the better end of the market, and should give many years of trouble free service.

Honeywell used to be the mutts nuts, but since they have become Residio controls keeping the Honeywell name, I’ve noticed a lot of failures from new, especially with room stats, they seem to stick on the switched live, in essence still calling when not supposed to be.

So did you get the replacement under warranty?

kind of. I wasn’t 100% sure it was faulty, so I bought a new unit. Now I know the previous one is faulty, I have arranged for a credit for the faulty unit.
