Hello

I have a boiler that has an upper and lower attachment and they both have dials in and I don’t know which controls the temperature of the water.

Pls see photo attached.

Can anyone help???

The two immersion elements have adjustable thermostats under the cover ,ONLY remove when electric is isolated to them

Some photos would be very helpful.

turn them both down to 50C.

See if the water continues to get too hot.

use a thermometer to discover the actual temperature of the tapwater.

Feel the plastic caps as the heater that is "on" will feel hotter.

haven't you got a timer?

Why are they both switched on?

Your HW cylinder has two immersion heaters, the bottom one will be on an off peak supplu, heats the water overnight, the top one is a boost that you have to manually set to on and is more expensive to run, the thermostat on the bottom immersion has probably failed, very easy to replace and not expensive

Both are set to maximum.

I don’t think anything is broke because it was serviced recently. We complained it was too cold but after they left it was too hot.

Which one do I turn down (or both) if the hot water is too hot?

The top one is a booster and only powers up when you press the boost switch, the bottom one is the constant use one , post a pic of the bottom one saying 1 to 5

I’ve turned the bottom one (green one) down to 2.

I’ve never used a booster button or have any idea where it is. Water is always boiling hot all day long and my electric bill is £136 a month for a flat of 2 people!

He says he doesn't know where the switch is for the top one, so that might also be on.

Turn it down.

We haven't seen the timer or other controls.

1. That is not a boiler, its an direct, unvented, hot water cylinder.
2. As others above have stated, both thermostats should be set at 60. If they have numbers 1 to 5 instead of degree markings, 4 will be around 60.
3. As others have also stated, the lower immersion heater is for the overnight rate (if you have a dual rate meter) and the upper only needs to be switched on if you run out of hot water during the day.
3. Those cylinders require an annual service for safety.
4. I don't like the look of the cable to the upper immersion heater. Both it, and the casing of the cylinder immediately above it appear to be heat marked. It might be that the electrical connections inside the immersion cap are not fully tight and are arcing. However, it might just be heat rising and taking dust with it. The cable shouldn't be wound round the cap like that.
5. That bag of whatever is obscuring the tun dish, which is part of the safety devices for the cylinder. It shouldn't be there.

If the top one is a booster, then why don’t we have a booster button? Not that we’ve needed it. The water is always very hot.

The top one doesn’t have numbers, it’s a dial without any markings. Should I put it where I’d imagine 4 (out of 5) would be?

It looks like the earth wires have been chopped off as well. Don't know how important earths are with immersions but my immersion is earthed via the cover securing stud. The other thing I think I can see in the OP's first picture is another immersion heater cap to the right of the cylinder. What would that be for?
