Building work and payment

Is there some sort of rule about when you should make payment to tradesmen when you get building/construction done?

My friend (who is a female) had some plumbing work and a Gas Safety Check done by a gas engineer

After causing a mini flood, shortly after he stated that he'd finished and demanded payment there and then before leaving.

Feeling intimidated, she paid.

Consequently, i would like to know if there are any rules in place for homeowners to point to in terms of when they can/should make payment?

Please note that nothing was agreed in advance (either verbal or in writing) about when payment should be made.

My electrician takes 50% 7 days in advance for materials. The remainder is paid after final invoice. Carpenter and plumber both bill after completion.

Seems reasonable for the plumber to demand payment on completion of the work if there's no contract (other than verbal).

Not sure what a mini flood is, could be a damp patch from residual water in a pipe or 2 inches of water throughout the house...

Hello Mr S

I’m a Sparkie and if I require any funds either prior or part way through a job , this is ALWAYS written on my quote

Funds are normally only required on larger jobs etc , and / or / if I dont know the Customer , 90% of my work is recommendation, so I take it my Customers are good for ‘credit’ so to speak

in this day & age it’s quite easy to put into writing terms and payment schedules

If I’m having work done at Home it’s ALWAYS part of my conversation with any Trade

Agree things beforehand. There is no rule.

Some want/expect instant payment, others will invoice.

Payment on completion, try going into a super market and telling the cashier you will pay the bill next week.
