We have a Profile boiler that feeds radiators, a hot water cylinder with electric element backup, and a cold water tank in the loft.
The boiler has been regularly serviced and it all works well.
The BG engineer who last serviced the boiler said that it won't last much longer and the entire system will need to be replaced to avoid a breakdown.
Apart from the cost, we don't want the disruption and damage that this would cause. We have the house arranged and decorated just how we want it.

So my question. Is there a modern boiler that could be fitted to replace the old one but still using the rest of the system?
Many thanks for any advice!

yes

but a Potterton Profile is a very good boiler, and, with proper care, may outlast a new boiler you buy today.

If BG don't feel able to look after it, start finding a local independent who is more competent. Preferably by personal recommendation from someone you know and trust.

Not a paid-for listing on an advertising website, whatever it calls itself.

Thank you for that very quick reply. I had a feeling the BG man was trying to up-sell.
What he said was that the circuit board could fail and there were no replacements. Is that true?

If it is possible to just replace the boiler only, we'll keep the Profile going until it finally dies!

Is that the BG eng on Homecare plan, well if thats the case they look at the warranty as a gamble and as it gets older they hike up the price or say they no longer want to deal with it.
Ive noticed though that BG do not really do a full service on your boilers, ie they do not check inhibiter, just make sure the unit is safe and nothing is falling apart, its still your responsibility to get inhibiter topped up.

This is all very good stuff. Thanks so much!
I haven't got a service plan, just called in BG to do the service.
I'm going to take your advice and look around to find a locally recommended plumber. I'll test him by seeing if he gives me the same advice as given here!

Thank you all again for the help!

P.S. I did flush out the system and renewed the inhibiter in 2012.

We have 2 Potterton Profiles in 2 rental properties and they have been going strong for 20 years with no problems.
We have 3 newish Vaillants each about 7yrs old and have spent a fortune maintaining them.
I'd keep the Profile until it fails but have a new installer lined up to fit the new one when/if it does cease working.

Get rid of BG , they are total charletans, nothing that cant be replaced on your boiler , should it require it, and of course you can just replace the boiler should it be required, BG are a total disgrace treating ALL their customers like this, it is management policy that the engineers have to constantly upsell, if they dont management are on their ass like a nappy

As said...BG are a joke..I have kept boilers going long after they have condemned or told customers parts are obsolete..Always makes me annoyed when they service boilers for many years then tell customers to get rid because they are rubbish...They do fancy themselves as Gas Gods or The boiler police.

Thanks again everyone. Very helpful advice and I will be following it up. I'm very reassured that we won't have to mess up the house to do a full system replacement - and so is the wife!
