I’ve had a builder round to look at digging out some sleepers (Approx 9 long) along the back of my garden. He quoted 3 days work at £1200, £250 for a skip plus cost of materials. At this sort of price I can’t afford it and will need to do it myself I think.

Other than a lot of hard work and digging, any advice on how to do the job please?

The old sleepers are pretty much disintegrated and are at level with the ground. The soil is incredibly sandy so I’m not worried about drainage etc.

Are they retaining anything? If it's just hard work, zero skill, you could cut them or otherwise reduce them.
Hire a skip that has a drop down flap for loading and use some kind of trolley with big wheels.
If you can cope with a mess, dig out one weekend and load the skip the next.
It will reduce the time panic

Thanks for the tips and advice. This might be a silly question but any idea how to tell if they are retaining anything? I do live uphill from the work so yes, there will be my garden back filled to it but there are a row of conifers that I’m working towards and the exiting disintegrated sleepers so I’m not sure.

So post some pictures

Yes, new sleepers in to replace the old ones. Here are three photo’s of the side in question. Starting at the front and photos going back away from the house...

I hope this helps and shows what I’m working with. Thanks everyone.
