England’s NHS is preparing to scrape the medical histories of 55m patients, including sensitive information on mental and sexual health, criminal records and abuse, into a database it will share with third parties.

Cori Crider, co-founder of Foxglove, a campaign group for digital rights, said: “We all want to see the NHS come out of the pandemic stronger” but noted that the NHS had been “completely silent” on who would have access to the data. “Is it pharma companies? The health arm of Google Deepmind? If you ask patients whether they want details of their fertility treatment or abortion, or results of their colonoscopy shared with [those companies], they’re not going to want that,” she said.

The link you give says the following about opting out. Doesn’t even mention the June 23rd date you highlight.

"There have been posts on social media with false information about opting out of sharing your data with the NHS. Here's what you need to know:
  • There is no 30 September deadline for opting out of sharing your data. You can opt out at any time.
  • NHS Digital will never sell your data.
  • There are strict rules about how NHS can use your data. It's only shared securely and safely.
  • Shared data helps the NHS. It has been used to find the first treatment for coronavirus and for vaccine research".

The GP Data opt out is 23rd June. That is NHS digital opt out.

Yet the NHS is quiet on who it will give access to this data.

As I mentioned in the other thread, if I opt out of GP data, will they be able to share my medical history with hospitals?

Yes that has nothing to do with it.

They are going to create a massive database of everyone records separate to your current data set with your GP and at the hospital.

This new database - third parties like Google will access and they can then get even more data about your health - something which should have the highest priority.

To repeat my reply in the other thread...

"Myself and my family have had the data opt out for quite a few years.

I have just called our surgery and it still applies as regards data not being shared with third parties.

But essential medical record data will be shared with hospitals should a person be hospitalised or information required at A&E, which is obviously the right thing to do."

Can you share links about this please. Sounds a bit far fetched.

Cool, thanks!

I heard that the date has been extended until September.
Using https://www.nhs.uk/your-nhs-data-matters/manage-your-choice/ you can confirm if you want to share your data or not.

Like most government database ideas, I do not trust them with it.
I do however trust that the database will be flakey, easily hackable and hacked yet we won't be told about it.
Copies of the database will also be left on a portable drive in the back of a taxi.

As usual :)

You are (at the moment) going to be allowed to opt out at any time, although should you do so after the cut off date then anything up to that point may have been 'sold off'...

I can't opt out - tried to do it but confirmation code never comes through. Tsk.

Its backdoor privatisation.

It’s not. The link says it’s for research and planning. I don’t have a problem with that. If we want a health service to cater for us, what’s wrong with them using your data for research and planning for the future? Better that than keeping quiet and finding out in 10 years time they haven’t got the infrastructure to cope with the way that people are getting illnesses because people kept quiet about it.

Why not go one further - go to your doctor, tell him you’re ill, refuse to tell him the symptoms but expect a cure!

Then print off the documents, sign them and then take them into your surgery...

Don't forget to get a receipt acknowledging it's been received.

And ignore idiots like mottie who it appears is happy to have his private medical data sold to the lowest bidder!
