Supply crisis: just 27 fuel tanker drivers from EU apply for emergency visas

We still seem to be getting a lot of 'European' courier drivers delivering packages at work. Maybe they have been here quite a while and applied for citizenship or something. I don't know. May be it would have been better to offer these visas' before they left with the addition they could be renewed every 6-12 months.
Trying to reach a foreign workforce is harder when they have left the country they were working in.

Only 27 fuel tanker drivers from the EU have applied to work in Britain under the government’s emergency scheme to tackle the petrol crisis, ministers have been told.

But Boris this morning said it was 127.

Who is tellling the truth?
Well boris does tend to exaggerate with numbers. All the time if he thinks it works in his favour...

But he knows he's lying so blames it on a "global one, not a UK-specific one"

Funny how it wasn't a problem before brexit, and that there very few fuel supply problems in the EU!

Maybe it's 27 EU drivers, and the other 100 are non-EU drivers. But non-EU HGV licences are not recognised in UK.
Interesting that we still recognise and accept EU HGV licences, but not other non-EU licences.
That was a bit of good forethought, not treating EU drivers as other third country drivers.

Trouble is Johnson and his cabal wanted the EU workers to go home. Making it easy for them to return to get us out of the merd goes against their bone-headed ideology. The Tories had no post Brexit plan, they're winging it and vainly trying to fight fires as they break out. They're not even prepared for the checks we should be making at our borders of EU goods into The UK. Should have started 1st Jan, but it's continually being put back. Lastest dealine was this month, but that won't happen. EU was organised for their checks, they began on 1st Jan.

We should be thanful that 6 million applications were made for residency here by EU nationals. Imagine where we would be now if they hadn't.

It doesn't matter. Boris could make up lie after lie and the bots on here will lap it up. See him as their televangelist, they forgive him for his lies and behaviour as he offers them the warm comfort of Spoony Sovereignty, it's our equivalent of the American Dream.

There seem to be plenty of sources saying:
- its a long term issue
- made worse by covid and the economic bounce back
- is a shortage across Europe also
Ah yes, but the EEA area still has freedom of movement and much less red tape...

Such as the recognition of a general acknowledgement of qualifications which no longer exist between the EEA and the UK...

Thus if there is shortage somewhere in the EEA the drivers are free to travel between countries to work unhindered...

Do you spot the difference between the UK and the EEA?

I'll give you a hint...

The UK is a third country as far as the EEA is concerned and vice versa!

It's all just political crap - Boris says he'll invite more drivers, knowing full well that there are not any drivers and hoping that before any need to arrive, things will be resolved, or we'll just accept things how they are. Same with the army helping out - they will make hardly any difference, but it makes it look like Boris is doing something.

Apparently, petrol stations are largely back to normal around here, and not seen any mention of army fuel trucks either.

What about the non-EU HGVs we see on our roads? Do no, say, Turkish trucks have Turkish drivers at the wheel?

Not sure. Isn't Turkey in a limited Common Market?
They have some sort of Customs Union Agreement.

It was a silly strategy in the first place, and shame on the industry blaming it on such.

The issue is pay and working conditions.

The industry struggles to recruit new blood, and when they do they treat them like rubbish, and rarely to companies actually take on those with little experience.

I was in Austria last week on a training course with some Germans (being trained by the Austrian s) and they have similar issues there they advise, they have philipinos doing HGV driving for peanuts pushing the Germans out, they are treated like they are on vessels. Paid peanuts, and send what they earn home and don't go home for years at a time. They said it's no longer polish and Latvians doing the jobs
