We're having a uPVC patio door replaced next week. I was wondering if the glass could be worth keeping for a cold frame or similar... They're quite large and it seems a shame to throw away perfectly good panels.

Yes, so long as the weight isn't an issue. I made one once out of an old shower door.

A good time to own a router to make a nice wooden frame (I don't) - yeah it needs a bit of support for sure.

In that case sir, your purchase of a vital piece of equipment is fully justified and no sensible wife/girlfriend could possibly object.

Especially when I'd use it to help her grow things in the garden?

Most definitely! In fact that is the whole reason why you need one, so she can enjoy her hobby safe in the knowledge her cold frame has been constructed correctly and with her safety of paramount importance.
