Hi all,

I'm looking for a good heat only gas boiler that can fire about 6 rads and an indirect coil hot water system (117 litre tank), although not generally both at the same time.

My existing system is solid fuel but I'd like to put in something I can have on a timer for cold mornings OR use in summer to heat water when I'm not lighting the fire.

My water supply is gravity fed from a tank, which measures between 0.7 and 0.8 bar.

Can anyone suggest the right sort of thing to be looking for and/or any makes to avoid?

Back in the spring I went for a Viessmann 100W 13kW (they have various power outputs though) and it`s a cracking little boiler. It`s simple, neat looking, and does the job nicely. I have a hot water cylinder and 8 radiators and it will happily heat both at the same time when the need arises.

Others here will have their views, but speaking as I find I cannot fault the Viessman.

It replaced a Vaillant Ecotec heat only unit which was a pile of excrement from day one - never again!

Are you keeping the solid fuel heating bit? If yes then you'll need some extra bits and pieces to allow them to co-exist efficiently.
Boilers- have a look at Intergas. V impressed with mine- quiet, modulates well, can run open vent or pressurised, no diverter valves (so if you want some combi action you can have it)

Both the Viessmann and Intergas sound like excellent recommendations. Since I live in Ireland I'm looking around at what's available here... The Viessmann can be got here... somehow jumping in price from £970 in the UK to €1600 over here! As for the Intergas, all I get is a "contact us for a price" which is another way of saying, we're gonna charge you an arm and a leg!
In the cheap end of the market, I'm seeing lots of Glow-worms and Baxis - are these any good? Or is it a case of false economy...

I realize you get what you pay for... had much the same experience with washing machines having got through two cheapo ones just after the standard 12 month warranty ran out.. finally splashed out on a Miele which is still going strong after 5 years and counting.

The days of getting what you pay for are long since gone...price has little to do with product reliability or longevity.
Have you considered backup from the manufacturer in terms of warranty call outs (and not voiding your warranty), spares availability when the warranty is voided or expires.
Many manufacturers have ok models and total dogs...and often the brand name is irrelevant as they all play the game of re-badging models brought in from their overseas manufacturing facilities.

Viessmann and intergas are very much niche boilers, never came across an intergas, wouldn't give a Viessmann the time of day. Stick with a tried and trusted brand, Worcester,Vaillant,Glowworm,Baxi,Main,Potterton,Ideal, all are good, but only as good as the installation.

I beg to differ, but hey ho it`s a good job we aren`t all the same isn`t it...........................

Some absolute junk in that list...all of Baxis current heat only boilers are re-badged Remeha with the hopeless all-in-one combustion module at an extortionate price.
Only SOME models from manufacturers are ok.

As for paying more and assuming a better boiler...Baxis latest incentive to installers

That is a big issue, installers installing the boiler which will give them the biggest reward. If you can find an installer who will also repair the boiler he installs, then you are halfway there. I expect intergas installers will be approved , and carry the spares needed if a fault occurs, but as I have never worked on one, I have no idea as to their reliability. Viessmann boilers were shocking, at least when I came across them, hoses splitting and taking out the fan, then waiting 'till one was in the country for a repair. That was at least 12 years ago, things may have got better. The list I gave was from my experience in breakdowns, they all fail from time to time, but it is the availability of spares which can be a pain.

"Approved installer" means you've wasted a day sitting at the manufacturers being brainwashed into believing their boilers are best thing since sliced bread.
Worcester Approved Installers are some of the worst in the trade.
