Hi,
I was hoping to get some advice on this issue before I call another installer to take look. The original installer although helpful doesn’t really seem to have much to suggest of help beyond “it’s probably air in the system”

A year ago we had a complete new h/w and heating system installed. This is an unvented system using a Vaillant Ecotec 430 plus system boiler. The house is a mid terrace house, well insulated on front/back and roof following a complete renovation project. Downstairs we have 3 UFH zones, upstairs are 5 bedrooms each with one radiator, 3 bathrooms each with one towel rail and a further two radiators in the 1st and 2nd floor hallways.

The system works fine if only using hot water.

However, if the heating is used we get daily f83 errors and the boiler shuts down. It’s hard to diagnose when this happens but it seems to me to occur whenever the thermostats have stopped calling for heat after the rooms have come up to temperature. The pump is wired back to the boiler with a permanent live so I don’t believe it is related to the pump overrun.

If the heating is left on permanently and permanently calling for heat the error doesn’t occurs and everything is fine.

I’ve tried to change the partial load setting down to 15kw from the original Auto/30kw but that hasn’t helped.

Could anybody suggest some pointers so I know what to discuss with whoever I get to look at this? Is this likely a problem with the boiler itself, the way it has been piped up, the wiring or some combination?

I appreciate this is very difficult to diagnose remotely but perhaps some of the pros have experienced this issue and could provide some guidance or simple/obvious things to check for.

I’m sure I’ve left out some key info you need so please let me know if I can provide anything else of help.

Thanks

Vaillant say this is insufficient temperature increase once the boiler is lit...
  • Low System Water Pressure
  • Flow Or Return NTC Thermistors Out Of Calibration (Should Read 12Kohms @ 20C) Or Not Connected To Pipework Correctly
  • Damaged Or Loose Connections On The Wiring Loom Between The NTC Thermistors And The Main PCB
  • Low Heat Input Into The Heat Exchanger – Poor Thermal Performance Caused By Low Gas Rate, Incorrectly Adjusted Gas Valve, Or Restriction/Poor Heat Transfer Within The Combustion Chamber
So if you have an unvented system I'd be looking at the water pressure

Just looked up your boiler and it says it is 'Open Vent' ie a tank in the loft. Still lack of water is the primary fault for F83. After that it's the sensors measuring flow and return temperatures

Wouldn't lack of water flow point to air rather than pumps or bypass? I suppose the pump not turning on might cause it.

Thanks. It’s unvented - we have a 310l unvented cylinder. Pressure is 2.5bar at the kitchen tap (next to the boiler).
The pump is a grundfos 15 50/60.

We only recently hooked up one of the reds and bled the air from the that rad. Is it worth checking all rads again for air?

Thanks

F83 is triggered when a temperature rise is not seen immediately after ignition. Can be caused by:
Pump too fast.
Pump set to modulating.
Pump not controlled by boiler.
Incorrectly set bypass.
Also check the 24v link has been removed if it is wired with 240v controls.

Hi
Did you resolve this issue?
I have the same issue albeit with an open vented Vaillant heat only Ecofit. Boiler will run fine but every morning f83 when due to come on or if desired room stat temperature has been met it will display f83.

Hi
Yes, apologies I should have come back to this.
We did resolve it. The root cause was the installer was basically a numpty. Amongst a load of other (now resolved) issues which I don’t think are relevant here (reverse circulation, UFH pump installed before main pump) the ABV had been installed with the wrong way round so the pump overrun wasn’t able to operate. So as long as there was a call for heat from at least one zone it was fine, once that was satisfied the boiler would overheat.
Having gained more knowledge than I ever cared to about this boiler I would be asking your installer to check that the pump is correctly wired to allow overrun to operate and that the abv is correctly set/installed.

This system has worked fine for a few years now.

Hope that helps
Thanks

How old is the installed boiler/system?
