nuclear fusion

Don't count your eggs, 'cos many think we can get 99% there but the last remaining 1% is unobtaniumable.

The example in the news lasted for 5secs and not enough power out for an electric kettle. ;) Might relate to power needed to start it.

There was a chap on this forum who was convinced that cold fusion was already a reliable source of low cost clean energy. If I recall correctly his forum identity was Warmsocks

Andrea Rossi was the inventor of a cold fusion reactor that warmsocks believed in.

EDIT the chaps ID was warmsoks and the product was E-CAT

Andrea Rossi's E-CAT has now proved itself in testing and we should all look forward to free energy by the end of 1990 1995 2000 2005 2010 2015 2020 2025.

On reading the thread title I had hoped someone was going to have a go as a DIY project. Would love to give it a go but not sure where to start.

150 million degrees. C plus

there is not material on earth ? That could with stand that temp

how are they containing that temperature

Probably a Tokamak.

"No materials exist that can withstand direct contact with such heat. So, to achieve fusion in a lab, scientists have devised a solution in which a super-heated gas, or plasma, is held inside a doughnut-shaped magnetic field."

Not sure if they sell 'em at Screwfix.

It's odd that for such an important subject and a ground-breaking result, it's been so little reported in the press. Obviously cakes and event photos are much more important.

Yes, the actual fusion is not the problem, we have bombs that can do that :cautious:, but the containment and sustainment of the reaction is the issue.

The people who are interested in what Katie wore to the awards ceremony, or the tragic backstory of the latest reality show contestant, aren't known for their interest in pushing the boundaries of known science.
