£100 bonus for switching off at peak time

Yes it does It is the meter reader that visits every two years to confirm readings and no obvious tampering what do you mean what will happen with smart meters ? these still need checking regardless
The fitters are busy out there fitting
I can't remember when a cheery chap tipped his cap at our meter to confirm a reading. For years i've read it myself, gave 'em the relevant numbers and life goes on...are 'smart' meters really worth installing? I've heard so many scare stories about this n' that so i've ignored e-mails telling me to get it done.

They may have not visited lately for fear of catching a cold.

£100 bonus. Stop it. Your making me laugh - who ever posted the thread in the fist place.

I dare say, if they were talking about installing dumb meters as they are now the smarts, that there would be lots of scare stories.

They do not bite! They are just a meter providing better feedback to the customer, and the supplier. The customer gets a little indoor display, which shows current consumption of G&E, the supplier, likewise can remotely read your meter, and can get frequent updates. You are better informed, the suppler is better informed.

It went rather wrong from the off, in that the design didn't consider people might swap suppliers, so when people swapped they went dumb, but now they would seem to have addressed that.

Yes, i get that, Harry, but are you saying it's better to have one installed than keep the old-style meter?

For some people it will make no difference. They meter by itself cannot save or cost you more, except pre-the cap, they offered special tariffs only for those with or willing to have a SM. Octopus is offering some very special time of day based consumption tariffs. Now we have this £100 discount if you limit your consumption during the evening peaks.

Aside from the above, a SM gives you near instant feedback on your consumption of gas and leccy, that knowledge can be made use of, if you have a mind to.

The comment I heard is that a user may save £100 of their total yearly bill. Peak period being 4 to 7 pm. Does that mean the charge in other periods will be fractionally less or will they charge more during that period? Hard to say really but the cap is per unit used not the total bill.

Yep - they have documented the conditions yet, only mentioned a potential £100 saving.

I don't see how the can charge more, there is a cap on the charge per unit. They cannot exceed the cap limit at anytime.

Wrong the older a standard bellows gas meter gets the more inaccurate it becomes in the customers favour which is why there used to be a 20 year meter exchange policy

Suggest that they will charge less out of the peak period. The point I wanted to make is that the £100 is not a certainty. Not how it was put across on the box anyway.

We probably use as low as we can in the period. My wife was fond of reboiling water in the kettle and even topping it up when not needed. I've always thought that was silly so bought a dispenser where the amount needed is dialled in. The conbi oven on convection is not that high a wattage but a gas top burner is often used for our meals. Sometimes a gas stove which unlike some does regulate well down when at temperature.

;) My wife said we could have our main meal lunchtime but it would seriously interfere with her life. It would be a rather late lunch.

Me go without a tea or coffee between 4 and 7pm - no way. I'd normally have 2 in that time period. 280ml boiled each time at a slightly lower temperature if instant coffee. The boiled setting is bound to be a bit under 100C really. My espresso machine, currently broken heats up rather quickly. About 1min using twin boilers. About the time it takes to prepare the grinds.

I'm lunching/dinnering at around 3pm, with sometimes a snack of sort later in the evening. Today was untypical, for a change I had a Lidl frozen sweet and sour chicken with rice, ten minutes in the microwave. 20:30 and I've just had baked potato, again done in the microwave.

I only maybe boil the kettle a couple of times a week. Just filling the with what is needed, once used, I leave it off it's stand so cannot just switch it on empty.

I use an electric coffee peculator twice a day, then the rest of my coffees are 50/50 milk water, in the microwave, plus just a glass of milk, and or orange.

That's interesting but quite dated now.

Electric van batteries are in the region of 70kWh to get 150-200miles of range and weigh in at 450kg
Where? When? What???
I still have to find a van driver who tells me their electric box build with slaves' blood can manage more than 80 miles.

And tamper with the reading.
