I was considering this headline 'Calls Grow to Disestablish Church of England as Christians become a minority. The census shows 5.5 million fewer holders of Faith in England and Wales - no data for Scotland; perhaps they've already made Nationalism their new religion?
It's prompted calls for urgent reform of laws requiring Christian teaching, worship in schools and (26) CofE bishops to sit in the House of Lords (which Labour has promised to abolish should they be elected).
Vernon Bogdanor, professor of government at King’s College London, said the results make the argument for keeping Church of England leaders in the House of Lords “more difficult to justify” and “raises the issue of the disestablishment of the Church of England”.
Dr Scot Peterson, scholar of religion and the state at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, said: “It’s been difficult to defend having an established church since the beginning of the 20th century, but it now becoming a figment of the imagination. The king being the head of the Church of England made sense in 1650, but not in 2022.”
I question Dr. Peterson's opinion and his sense of History since the King had recently been executed in 1650 but does it make sense to defenestrate the Monarchy and abolish the role of the Church in our society - what say you?

Yes, it does depending on the context of the intended use within a sentence.
Some Republicans would cheerfully abolish the Church while moderates will settle for disestablishing the role of the Church in the state and in education.

It would mean abolishing the establishment of the church in the state.
I don't approve of religious anything, but leaving a vacuum might cause probems.

Words on a screen have a 2-D impression leaving the reader to make up their mind as to the context behind the tone of specific words used to impart the meaning.
I take the call to 'disestablish' the role of the Anglican Church in matters of State and in schools to mean leaving politicians and the people to decide for themselves on whether to follow their faith privately and not involve spiritual matters in daily life.
Radical campaigners would seek to remove Religion from our live altogether.
As we are a conservative country i'd say a compromise would be found for the minority of people who wish to maintain their religious practices as we do for ethnic minorities, such as Muslims, Jews and Hindus...et al.
And to be clear, we're discussing the Anglican Church, not the Catholic Church as JP has illustrated earlier in the thread. Far less pomp in the circumstances, i'd say.

How many of these 99.9% of scientists actually specialise in climate science?.
When you start quoting emphatic figures like 99.9% you sound like an election officer for some third world dictatorship.
Disestablish in the context of the original of the original post will obviously result in the abolition of the role of the CoE as the state church.
So maybe the term abolish is correct.

It's what the research claims. You could refute it if you are so inclined.
You end up with people like Tony Blair and Boris Johnson.
Political division would the norm.
