Can someone advise what this pipe is likely to be?

We will be taking the garage down shortly, and there's an unused pipe with a cap on it.

Does anyone have any idea what this pipe is likely to be? It runs under the concrete so I can't actually follow it back.

The main question is - is it possible that this is a gas pipe?

Compression fitting indicates it's probably water. Need to release the square end plug in the end to see if it's 'live'.
i.e. if there is water still flowing in it.

It would be a strange place to need a gas supply, if that is outside - as it appears to be?

I would judge it to be a water pipe, one time with an outside tap on the end.

Tarnished copper pipe, definitely.
As the garage is coming down, I would start tracing back as far as possible to where it originates from. If it branches off your main incomer, isolate the incomer, remove the branch, seal off the T joint or put a new small section of straight pipe in, insulate as much as you can and then fill in the trench. It may be worthwhile making a note of which way, and what distance from various landmarks, the incomer runs for when you take the garage down.

It is always a good idea to cut back dead legs in water supplies as they can become breeding grounds for bacteria (with thanks to someone over in the plumbing forum on here who pointed that out to me several years ago)
