you need a pic of a hot water tank, have you not seen one before copper cylinder tank will get one tomorrow. Ahhhhh my mistake I just call it the hot water tank but I suppose it’s a cold water tank only gets hot when heating is on

No ,I have never seen a hot water tank. Seen plenty of hot water cylinders ,and not all made out of copper.

Cold water tank in the loft makes more sense ! Does the float valve fully close ,if it doesn't the level will eventually rise to the overflow point.
It shouldn't get hot though ?

This is the tank the water level is always below overflow out pipe

That's a combination cylinder,if the overflow isn't reached ,where is the dripping coming from ?

That’s what I’m asking could it be condensation in the overflow is there anything I could do to stop it

Disconnect OF from cylinder and see if it drips there. Can't see how it can be condensation but then again, I'm not there looking at it.

If it's condensation on the outside of an overflow pipe there would be multiple signs.

No! You have a combination cylinder, as Terry advised once you'd posted the pic!

In order to get advice from plumbers on here, you need to understand, we need the correct description / terminology / photo to know exactly what system(s) people have, rather than what they like to call them!

I have lost count of the number of times I have been to a job and asked the customer to show me where their boiler is... Only to be taken to the hot water cylinder!

Does that give you an idea of why we ask what you think are stupid questions!

Yes it could seeing as it's a large overflpw (Scottish regs). And presumably a cold Scottish roof space. You could try isulating it with some fibreglass wrapped round it.

But why would it create condensation? There's no water in it!

Water in the feed cistern getting hot so an amount of steam getting into the overflow ?
