All - My nearly 12 year old boiler is making a loud noise which comes on randomly all times of the day. It has happened now 4 times in last one week and we have had british gas come in a check as well. Boiler in good condition and they say its likely air in the radiators. How do we check this and resolve? Really confused and worried as the noise is very loud and all pipes inside the house shake.

Go around and bleed air out of the radiators.

Inside the boiler there should be an auto air vent. The cap could be blocked or closed.

Why British gas? Anyway, if they claimed it's air in the pipes, why did they not fix the issue?

Next time it happens, record a video around the area where the noise is loudest.
You could post it on YouTube and leave a link here.
It would also be good to show to any engineers that visit, if the problem is intermittent.

British gas is our emergency service provider.

Our radiators are really old. How do you bleed air out? Any video link you can share?

I have a video on my phone let me try to upload that. We did show the video to BG engineer and he checked everything in boiler and found no issues however the problem persist. TY

Any risk with bleeding the air? any chance my radiator could quit working or worse my boiler is impacted. I am total novice hence a bit worried....

Nothing bad will happen. After bleeding check the boilers pressure, it might drop a bit, if it does pressurise to 1.5 bar.

Ok thank you so much. We noticed that by reducing the temperature on the boiler the sound goes away. Does it still sound like a air issue? This just solves the problem for a few hours if that. The moment we bring the temp up and run it for an hour the sound is back. BG engineer said to let it run and capture the code but I feel so unsafe with this noise. Its like a freight train running next to your ear....

Without hearing the sound we can't determine the real issue.

What was the old temperature set at?

Kettling occurs when the water in the heat exchanger gets too hot and starts to steam or boil, which can make loud noises this can be a issue with a high set temperature. (However, I doubt this is your case)

Why don't you just ask British gas to actually fix the fault?

Here is the video Link:

Also, how do I bleed air from this radiator.

Video link isn’t working. You use a radiator bleed key, insert into that and turn anti-clockwise until water is present, and do this to all first floor radiators, but I must agree with @Jurassicspark - get BG to fix the issue rather than charge you to tell you what’s the fault is for you to fix. Unless you don’t have that level of cover? Are you sure it’s the boiler making noise? Could it be a faulty tap or toilet float valve?

no clue but when we change the temp on boiler the noise stops so sounds like its connected. BG is coming for a service on Tuesday so will try that.

Not sure why the Vid is not working.

Oh boy how do I sort the fan issue? How do we narrow it down?
