Just had a shower pump fitted in the airing cupboard and part of the process plastic pipes have been fitting coming out of the ensuite shower room, and across the full length of the loft, and then down into the airing cupboard. They are quite narrow plastic pipes. Do I need to insulate the cold and hot pipes. Any problems if I do not, or any advantages to doing it. There is some insulation on top presently which was there before, but not sure if I need to pipe lag them as well? They are not insulated at all when they drop down into the airing cupboard. And what pipe lagging would i need?

Any pipework that holds water, that is run outside of the thermal envelope should be insulated.

f it runs inside then no real need. Of course insulating with also stop heat loss over the pipe length and reduce thermal soak from hot to cold if they are run together. For the duration of the shower though will it matter much, probably not.

So is that a yes, I just wondered why the plumber hadnt suggested it, or whether he thought it being under the existing loft insulation was enough.

Being under the existing loft insulation is likely to be enough but the cost of pipe lagging is low and the cost of burst pipes is high. I would lag them with the thickest pipe lagging that I could get to fit.
