Manhole drain base blocking with build up of toilet paper.

Hi,
I have a drain base that keeps blocking over time, the only entry is at 9 o'clock and the exit is at 12 o'clock all other ports are blocked off.
The toilet paper and crap continually build up and block the exit, I have to constantly hose the debris away to get drain flowing again.
Does anyone know how I could safely force the flow from 9 o'clock to 12 ok clock thus preventing the build up of debris. Is there any product I could buy to block off all other channel entries from main central gully.

Rat flaps will work to block off gully entrance/exits for debris. They will let water through though, but not the solids.

It's a very common problem. So much so, that one BCO used to welcome a storm inlet onto the through channel, saying that it would help keep things clear.
Mine does the same, unfortunately.

If none of the other channels are in use then you could shape/fashion some bungs from plastic or an old bucket and silicone in place to only allow the waste to flow from 9 to 12 o’clock.

Just ban folks from using the facilities until your finished and the silicone is dry!

Probably not compliant with some regs, but maybe a practical solution.

Good point. Many the bung bigger than the outlet and attached a piece of string so you can yank it out if it ever dislodges

We have had a similar problem over Christmas with very slow clearing of the toilet when flushed. We had a very helpful gentleman (plumber) who examined the situation and rodded appropriately, and discovered that our problem also was toilet paper. He cleared it and it once again works properly.
Fortunately, we have been here for well over twenty years without problems, so hopefully we shall be OK for as long as that again.

Either soil stack is too close to the chamber, or the incoming sewer has too steep a fall on it, either way, it a common issue with waste flying into the chamber and fouling the opposite benching/unused channels before blocking up completely.

Simple option, would be to fit a channel cover for the unused side, Osma do them, (although not cheap), part numbers are 4D948 (Left Hand) and 4D949 (Right Hand). Other options are a bit more involved, excavate and move the chamber along slight so the lateral comes in on the 45º entry, or rotate the chamber 45º and adapt the pipework so the flow goes through the main channel.

Have known the plastic chambers to be removed and replaced with a brick built chamber in some cases with a high flow and repeated issues, think one such instance was at a school.

Even if it doesn't block you'll usually have a mound of something sitting there and stinking.

Replace it. As suggested above, the main channel should be at 45 degrees, with a 45 on its inlet and outlet. Use a single socket 45 so it's nice and tight up to the chamber. Then everything will go straight through the middle and not build up in a dead end.

You'll lose the stepped drop that it currently falls down so will need to re-align the inlet or outlet pipe perhaps for 1m or so to make a gentle slope instead.
