1st Feb 25% tariff on Mexico + Canada, 10% on China

Crack on lad, stop the export of hurling bats, you'll cripple America in no time.
If America doesn't want to do business with the world, what do you expect the world to do.
America is still a great country but its going in the wrong direction.

Traditionally, the Chinese have set up manufacturing in Mexico for that exact purpose, to sell tariff free in the US.
American businesses import Chinese products made in Mexico.

Trumps tariffs will affect USA businesses and USA consumers

Yes I know, it's good for America, creating Jobs, it's good for Germany because it's opened up a huge market, tariff free and cars exported from US to Europe are usually tariff free because of the number of European components.
So the 10% EU tariff isn’t actually true as the biggest car exporter to EU from USA according to you is tariff free.

The reality is we don't know yet. It's really a case of 'wait and see'. You might need to be reminded that the most learned of left wing minds on this esteemed left wing forum were confident in predicting Trump would lose the election, they were wrong, he won.

We are hooked on cheap oversees labour that help suppliers sell their goods/services at low, sometimes very low, prices to increase profit
This is what underpins the standard of living of millions of people in Europe and America.
Can we start making our own cheap tat for the same price as cheap Chinese tat.

Trump had the same advantage as Boris Johnson at election time.
With Johnson it was a no hoper Corbyn as an opponent, likewise, Trump had an octogenerian with advanced brain rot as opponent, even Democrats decided to vote for Trump.
If Trump delivers on the promises in his fantasy manifesto, he deserves support.

It's complicated.

Many years ago I went into London, whatever street it was that was famous for music shops, Tottenham Court Rd, Denmark St maybe or some or other street off Piccadilly, I don't Know, it was a long time ago.

Anyway, I bought myself a Gibson Les Paul Studio, black with gold hardware, stunning. Apart from being a stunning instrument, it was a work of art in every sense of the word.
Gibson pretty much ruled the world of guitars until Fender came along with the Stratocaster, simpler in design not having a 'sculptured' face, not as refined in some ways and possibly easier to play. They caught on quick particularly with the likes of Hendrix and Clapton adopting them.#
Because of the flat face and simpler design, they were cheaper than Gibson and started to pick away at Gibson's market share.
Gibson retaliated by setting up an alternative factory making the same guitars under the brand name 'Epiphone', they were and are very good quality guitars.
So, now Gibson were undercutting Fender, Fender retaliated by introducing Fender Squier, a copy made outside of America, the first few years were made in Japam. The story goes that when Fender received the first samples from Japan, they s**t themselves because the quality exceeded what they were making. I've got a Japanese Squier I bought for a couple of hundred quid, supposedly they're quite collectible.

Anyway, since then, Fender Squier has produced in India, Korea, Lord knows where else and USA Fender has produced large scale in Mexico.

Don't care really, I just love guitars.

Where did it all go wrong.
There was a time after the fall of the Soviet Union, it was believed that the world would come together for the benefit of all.
Russia had cheap oil and gas, China was workshop of the world, America and Europe had brains, they were and still are leaders in creativity and innovation.
Working together using each others strengths for mutual benefit, the world could have been a wealthier and healthier place fir everyone.
Look at it now.

And the Irish had the potatoes,

I'm sorry, couldn't resist that.
But you are right, there was a period decades back when world peace seemed on the cards, it does seem to be a missed opportunity.

That's why the Chinese are building a huge port in Peru...

To bypass the US entirely in South/Central America!
The Chinese have the right idea.
By building infrastructure to make transport easier, it helps devolop the
country which in turn creates wealth, which in turn creates customers for Chinese goods.
Its called mutual self interest.

No.

Ref inequality, while China has done a huge amount (relatively) to reduce the proportion of their population in extreme poverty, (like from half to a very few percent) their overall inequality (Gini) has increased.
