Republicans target same sex marriage

I got the impression when we were discussing trans rights the other week, that most posters on here were supportive of the LG bit of LGBTQ+, and it was the TQ+ part which many have a problem with.

Anyway, I have just been reading that Republicans legislators in states across the USA are bringing in laws which will discriminate against people in same sex marriages. The aim is to get a case before the Supreme Court in the hope that they will overturn their ruling from 2015 which made same sex marriages legal everywhere in the USA. If they win, then individual states will have control over the issue again. In the same way the overturning of the Roe v Wade case on abortion rights gave that power back to individual states.

Obergefell vs. Hodges did not legalise same sex marriage, it forced it to be recognised where it had occurred. The "vote" was pretty close, so it's no surprise that someone thinks they may have the numbers to swing it back the other way. There are many that believe marriage is between a man and a woman (by birth) and not what we used to call civil partnerships.

Obergefell vs. Hodges did not legalise same sex marriage, it forced it to be recognised where it had occurred.

I think it did both. Made future same sex marriages legal and recognised existing same sex marriages which had occurred in other jurisdictions.

The "vote" was pretty close, so it's no surprise that someone thinks they may have the numbers to swing it back the other way.

They are using the exactly the same play book as used against abortion rights. Passing blatantly discriminatory legislation which they hope will get challenged all the way to the Supreme Court. To achieve this, they seem to be targetting marriage incentives by only awarding them to opposite sex couples.

sorry my point was that it was not about legalising same sex marriage, but making them equal.

Probably. But I don't really think about it that deeply anymore. I just think it's nice.

It didn't need to, as it was never deemed illegal in the eyes of the law (US Constitution), in the first place. There is a recognised 'fundamental right to marry' according to the US Constitution.
