how soon will Trump back down over tariffs

Neither USA nor China can afford the damage to economy.

China has a massive trade surplus with USA and can’t afford to lose it as a market

China has a huge competitive advantage over America because it’s manufacturing cost is so much lower….America simply can’t manufacture itself what it buys from China and it can buy it from elsewhere as Trump has tariffed every major cheap Labour economy.

The question is which country can survive the longest with silly tariffs in place

Well, when it comes to things like clothing, do US workers really want to work in US sweat shops pumping out clothing items? And even if they do, how will the consumer cost compare to clothing manufactured in Asia and will US consumers be happy to pay more?

Tariffs are just the start of it.

China has a whole range of other more serious things it can do. The USA is so dependent on them. Presumably it also applies in reverse.

Someone explained yesterday that they also have a lot of friends now which gives them other routes into the US. They won't be stuck in the short/medium term.

Go through North Korea or Russia perhaps, they of course have 0% tariffs imposed by Trump.

Trump is boasting that tarrifs are already bringing in 2 billion dollars a day.
So his idea to get the American consumer to pay a tax in order to pay for tax cuts seems to be going well, even if it doesn't make any sense.
Trump either has an idea that is so ingenious that it is beyond the comprehension of ordinary mortals or else he is just a flecking ejit.
Time will tell.
His mistake is to assume Americans will invest in new industry to produce goods internally. As Musck found Americans aren’t interested in helping home grown industries, they interested in money and profit, which is why Ellon needs to bring in talent from India. Economic laws follow human self interest not vice versa.

I'll state the obvious, something that's true in all aspects of life.

If you're directly affected in a negative way by something, you bother. If you're not, less so. If it positively affects you, you're either neutral or happy about the change.

Example. I'm a landlord, so when the government introduce legislation I view as punitive, it bothers me. If you're not a landlord, you most likely couldn't care less. And if you're a tenant and you see it as a positive, you're neutral or happy.

How this tariff stuff will affect Trump and the Republican Party will largely depend on how many US citizens and businesses are adversely affected.

It's not the best analogy but I'll use it. You know how we sometimes have the conversation here in the UK about needing foreign workers to work on farms etc because UK folk don't want to do these jobs? Well, when it comes to things like clothing, do US workers really want to work in US sweat shops pumping out clothing items? And even if they do, how will the consumer cost compare to clothing manufactured in Asia and will US consumers be happy to pay more?

As an investment guy on the telly box said, if you want to buy a $3000 iPhone, have it made in the States. If you want to buy a $1000 iPhone, make it in China. If you want to buy $300 sneakers, have them made in the States. If you want to buy $80 sneakers, make them in China.
Aren’t you the poster who started a thread praising Trumpf as a breath of fresh air?
