Hi all,

I have a soil pipe in our kitchen that has a connection for an old water softener that we have disposed of and I need to repair/reseal the hole. As per the photo, the pipe that was inserted and solvent welded into the boss (which itself is also solvent welded) broke off- with minimal force, so had clearly deteriorated for whatever reason.

How would I go about repairing this? I was going to just cut the whole section of soil pipe out and use couplers but then realised I have no play in the pipe vertically so I presume this will be impossible? What would be the best solution here?

Thanks
Simon

Yes, Slip Couplings are your answer. Cut a section out, (I suspect you may have to replace at least one of the waste connections into the stack to get enough room. Chamfer all cut ends appropriately. Cut section to replace to appropriate length, slide a Slip Coupler onto each end, slot section in, carefully slide Couplings up/down as appropriate to make the joints.

I always mark the point as to where the coupling must go to to ensure the pipework is home an adequate distance.

Or you could just grind off the boss with a rotary file back to the soil pipe and bond on a replacement.

Are you sure it's solvent weld where the pipe snapped ? To me that looks like it could be push fit in which case I would be trying to pull it out.
Failing that I would gently heat around the boss and pull it off the stack. There is a chance it could damage the stack but thats where the 2 slip couplers will come in.
If you manage to get it off clean the area ,silicone it all up and clamp it around.

I must admit I missed the most recent replies but thanks all.

I’ve completed the repair today- as suggested using some pencil markings to position to slip coupler correctly. I used a solvent weld coupler at the bottom to then slot my new branched section onto. All seems to be sorted.

I take it I don’t need to take an extra precautions to stop the slip coupler sliding down? It seems pretty solid…
