The care labels, hanging from the side seam, of T-shirts, cause my skin intense irritation. Cutting the label back to the seam doesn't help, the raw edge can even make even worse. Trying to unpick it, the seam comes apart. Has anyone found a solution that works, other than adding a second T-shirt underneath the offending one?

They do seem to be bigger than they used to be, I just cut them off it seems to work for me

With a very sharp, small pair of nail scissors, bevel the label by snipping the corners off.

Just a tiny amount is removed, so there is no longer a sharp square tip. It works when the label is a flat rectangle, and also when the ribbon has been doubled over into a loop and ironed flat.

By the time you throw the garment away, the cut will have frayed.

The labels that cause me the most bother are some sort of hard plasticky feeling ones, but also the softer care labels seem to have some kind of heat welded edges that are a nuisance too, but they usually respond well to cutting, either the edge or the whole label and over time they fray more

For the hard plasticky ones I rip the labels rather than cut them as this generates a much softer edge, and if there are several leaves, I rip them individually at slightly different remnant lengths. Feathering the edge by picking at it is also possible if you've already cut it. A small iron-on fabric patch over the stub may help if it's still just a block of pastic, if you fray the edges of the patch

Depending on the style of stitching it's sometimes possible to make cuts in the label, starting at where the stitch punctures and going towards the nearest edge, so that the label can be dragged out from under the stitching..

..but there is, of course always the possibility to just cut the stitching and then right away redo it by hand; it's only a short run, and easily a "while watching Netflix" job

I find that any sort of plasticky material, against my skin, causes tremendous irritation. I don't notice them for the first hour or so, but after a while, the skin becomes quite raw in the area.

You're not alone. I've always been most pleased when I find garments from a brand who sew them in after the seam has been sewn, so they can be easily unpicked.

In desperate moments I've turned garments inside out; function over form!
