Had my eye on a 60" LG sold by Argos to replace our existing 50" LG. This will then go in the den to replace the ageing 40" Samsung which has lost half its channels it's that old.

Well, story of my life, I farted around and when I eventually went to buy one, they were sold out. Being an older model, I guess they won't get any more in, although they have the option to leave your email so they can notify you when they're back in stock.

I'm not sure this will happen, so I looked around for other 60 inch TVs.

Can only find some Hi Sense 58" models.

What would you recommend?

The fireplace is 52" and a 60" (diagonal measurement) TV fits just nicely with a bit either side. We can't have a wider TV because we have some oak display cabs either side of the fireplace.

Curry’s have 55” Hisense’s ( freely models , no aerial required) from £300. I have the 65” model .

Any 60" LG from JL online, I wouldn't buy a TV any other way having tried Richer Sounds, rubbish service. Currys? You must be mad!

The Hi Sense use the same "inners as the cheap offerings from Toshiba / bush / Polaroid ect. I would go for a Samsung. Just brought a 55 LG and you have to constantly clear the memory otherwise it will do it by itself by turning off in the middle of something you are watching - "optimising memory" it may do this 3 or 4 times in a row until its happy again.

I don't believe Hisense TVs are made for them by the Turkish company Vestel (who do supply sets to some of those other brands).
Hisense TVs are made in the Serbian Gorenje factory for EU/UK.

Richer Sounds are usually pretty good CS. John Lewis' reputation for that is getting poorer. (from other forums)

In our opinion (me and the wife) the hisense TV offering is crap.
The Freely app has been coming up with blanks screens a lot recently, a recent update screwed the whole telly up & wiped all our settings, you are restricted to only the apps that Vidaa/Hiisense want you to have and cannot install whatever you want (especially if that allows you to watch dodgy tv lol).

The sooner we get rid of this garbage and get a decent tv the better IMHO.

Yes, our 50" LG does that and it ****es me off royally. I thank everyone here for the help given regarding that issue, especially Motman.

RS have basically told me that the guarantee does not cover apps etc....

So, I'm rather put off LG. I was keeping my eye on the 60" model that Argos are selling, but it's still out of stock, and I'm wondering if it will ever come back in, as it was an older model.

I have seen on RS a 60" TV made by Mitchell and Brown. Some say they are made by Vestel, someone I spoke to in Euronics said they are made by Cello. I don't know if they are any good but, and here's the kicker, they have LGs OS, which will have the same ****ty "optimising memory" bug, won't it?

I can't find any other 60" TVs. Even on JL. I fancy a TV with Freeview Play so we can scroll back and watch stuff we have missed.

Are there any fans of Freely here? When I was last in RS, I talked to the guy about it and he showed me the interface. Now, for me as someone with vision that isn't 100%, it was much better to read than the one on my LG TV on a grey background.

He also told me that at the moment you can plug Freely TVs into the aerial and get more channels. Does that make sense?

Whenever anyone mentions big tellies, I always think of the words to this song…….

That is currently true, but it's not extra channels, it's just those which are already on Freeview.

The point of Freely is to move people away from aerials entirely and have everything delivered over the Internet.
If/when it's completed, all of the Freeview channels will be available on it.
Today you can get 20 or so via the internet and will need an aerial for the rest.

Advantages - no aerial required.

Disadvantages - requires internet to work, will inevitably contain spyware to detail what people are watching and when, likely to contain pay per view or similar services in future, may be some ulterior motive to make all TV pay for or perhaps some kind of TV licence replacement subscription affair.

One thing to consider is the viewing angle. The bigger the TV the lower it needs to be mounted to align with the optimal viewing angle while seated. Since the TV is above a fire place, its unlikely that this will be correct.

Yes I mentioned this in another thread. The ideal height is from your usual viewing position your eyes should be at the level of the bottom of the screen. ITV above a fireplace is a daft position.
