I wonder how many on here are self employed vs Employed. I know at one time it was better to be self employed money wise. However has the tables turned since covid? I get amazing money and garanteed every month, overtime whenever I like, expensive tools supplied, holiday pay and even sick pay if you go off sick. Not sure if I could earn the sort of money self employed that I get employed.

I retired last year after over 30 years of being my own boss. I never contracted on sites, all were private customers although I did some council work some years back. There were ups and downs for sure, but generally I can't complain. Seems to me we're going into a golden age for craftsmen, there's little competition out there, charge what you want.
Your situation is a little different, utility company with massive contracts, they can pay well and offer great benefits, especially for someone as good looking as yourself.

The best jobs are the ones you create. If you can find your own work, then it's usually better to be self employed.

It depends how hard you want to work. I can bank roughly £1200 p/wk (spread over 365 days). We are on site at 8 and usually leave at 3:30, ( to pick up mat's for the next day). Monday to Friday. We work exclusively in a 20 mile (mostly 15) radius. I could almost double that if I wanted to work more hours, which I don't or travel further, which I don't.
A friend of mine that contracts for Biffa has said I could earn £4k for a weekend. Not interested.
I look at jobs (and price them) at the weekend.

Take into account 5 weeks paid holiday, + all bank holidays plus full sick pay from day 1, pension contributions from employer and no accountants bills each year. The benefits of self employment are certainly just on par being employed, my core hours are 7.45am to 4.15pm 5 days a week and Friday finish at 12.45pm. I was called out last night and on site for two hours, I get today off on full pay plus £100 for being called out at 10pm last night. Not saying how great my job is as some are better than mine but just comparing your example and my example I am not seeing the benefit of self employment like it used to be.

If I could earn 4k in a weekend I'd just work every other weekend?

And I'm really not seeing any discernible differences than it used to be. The only thing I can echo is what Filly said, in that fewer skilled tradesmen usually results in bonanza time. You then get chancers moving in to what they see is a lucrative arena, and bu99ering it up for the next 12 - 24 months. and so the cycle continues....

The only benefit of self employment as far as I am concerned is you are in charge of your own (work) destiny. That means a lot to someone like me.

I'd hate to be on call.

It may be that one can only be in the position to get the weekend work if you are also doing the weekdays too.
Then, it loses its attraction unless you are solely motivated by the numbers.

Feast or famine.
