My Mum (heading for 89) asked me for help with her car insurance renewal.

You know the usual routine....

You ring your insurance company. They tell you it's going to cost more this year and your loyalty means sweet FA.

So you end up trawling the comparison sites for a better deal.

I suggested a starting point of ringing her existing insurer and asking what the renewal would be.

Her renewal is due 1 October, but Which? magazine reckoned she should start enquiring around 3 weeks before for the best price.

The upshot was she was told that last year's premium was £967.84.

This year's would be.....

......£894.33

But we can do better than that, she said. Because of your loyalty, we can offer you this year's premium at......

........£794.33

A discount of 173.51.

Now, I know a premium of nigh-on a grand is huge but for a nearly 90 year old, it's there or there abouts.

But to get a chunky discount is very welcome!

One happy Mum!

Does she have a mileage written down with them as if she only does a bit then that may attract a discount

I think classic car insurance takes into account that you dont drive it often - and you are precious about it -

my mother who is the same age, her premium last Feb for a venga was £930, she really did not want to pay and was thinking about giving up on the driving - hopefully hers will come down a bit next year, I think premiums are falling at the moment

Gosh what a coincidence because your username is ......

TBH, she values her independence.

As long as she is fit and able to drive, she is happy to pay the premium.

When the time comes, and she has to give up, her premium will buy lots of taxis and she doesn't do loads of miles.

But the important thing to explain is that she has declared a maximum annual mileage for years to her insurers and this is the first company that has offered a discount, the first time her premium has gone down.

If you ever come to west London you have to let me ride the Transam.
I don't mind the Corvette, but I have been in one of them already.
