Government to announce their plans tomorrow.

Predominant reason for the card (at present) is for it to be shown if seeking employment i.e. to crack down on illegal workers. Card to be checked against central database to ensure its legitimacy.

Citizens will likely be asked to produce the card in other scenarios (tbc).

To be called the Brit Card (tbc).

Primary driver is to reduce illegal immigration.

If it comes to pass, I'm not convinced an ID card will have much if any positive impact on reducing illegal immigration. Your thoughts?

How could it possibly reduce migration, illegal or otherwise? Starmer is certifiable. First he says age verification on websites prevents predators talking to minors, then he claims that making UK citizens have digital ID will prevent the influx of non-UK citizens with no ID.

I dare say all the conspiracy theorists will be muttering about WEF and globalists and trying to control us.

As a talking head has just said on the telly box, if there's currently someone working illegally in a kebab shop for £20 a day cash in hand, and the owner is happy to employ them, this card will do diddly squat to stop such scenarios.

The primary reason is it makes databases much easier. Everything else is a nice bonus.

If it was genuinely for the benefit of the public, and to combat illegals living in the UK, it would be a physical card. Anybody with an ounce of sense knows that the implementation of a digital ID is all around control. It's basically the beginnings of China's social credit score system. Goods and services will be channelled through the ID system and will be denied to 'undesirables'. Our carbon footprint will be stored against our ID and we'll be charged more for travel, or banned completely, if it's too high. And so on.

I wonder how much we will be expected to pay for these cards. Probably priced similar to a passport as they will presumably be doing similar identification checks before issuing a card.

I'll willingly carry anything that is given to me for ID, but I'll not provide a highly intrusive smart phone just to facilitate a digital ID method. If the new digital ID needs a smart phone, then the state will have to provide AND maintain the phone

People's whole lives are becoming connected to their phone. It doesn't feel like a good thing.
