That looks like a time bomb! think yourself lucky you decided to remove the plasterboard.
Yes agreed, would not have been fun if we'd done a full renovation only to have the ceiling/floor cave in!
 
We are the leaseholders and therefore the landlords.... yes need to check whether floor/ceiling repairs would be a split cost or not but I know for a fact we own the lease for both the downstairs and upstairs flats. Yes will check with our solicitors but in fairness I'm not really sure how a survey would have found it!

Probably done so they could tile the kitchen floor above. Few new joists will sort it out. If you have the headroom you could fit them under the existing to save disturbing all that trimmed stuff.

Would be interesting to know how they shuttered it, maybe chucked sand in and then dropped the ceilings and swept it up?
 
Can’t they own the freehold as well? As in own the building shared?
If the OP owns the freehold (owns the building), he is not a leaseholder (does not own the building).

He may own the building jointly with others, as joint freeholders under a collective enfranchisement arrangement, and be responsible jointly, or partly, for its management. Non of this is a lease.

That is exactly what I've been wondering! Whatever they've used it wasn't straight/level or the more concerning alternative is the concrete has crumbled that much, there was a fair bit of crumbled bits on the ceiling that fell onto me when I pulled it down but not enough to account for that much loss if the bottom was originally straight!
