You can go round and round with that argument...many would say it shortened the war and saved many lives by doing so. The Japanese weren't going to surrender.
Fact is that the only country at the time with nuclear weapons decided to deploy them against two civilian targets...
Hence the race by other nations to acquire them...
And as for the non proliferation treaty, North Korea, India, Pakistan, israel, and for a short time South Africa managed to get around it.
In part aided by those who drafted the treaty!
