We should have stayed in the EU worked with our European allies to build a European army. Farage's friend over in Russia didn't like that idea though.
Whilst we have the USA safety umberella with NATO it would be a bad move. Who would be in control of a European army? The French, Brussels, Germany. Big NATO players would not want to hand over their input.

We can't rely on the US any more. Trump is insane and Hegseth has recently said things about the UK that no ally would say.

I suspect the European council would appointment a leader of an EU army.

Trump won't be around for long, the special relationship will be restored once he is out of the picture.

The democrats are pretty pathetic at moment so I won't hold my breath. We might end up with JD Vance which won't be much of an improvement.

European unity exists within NATO, why would you think a European army would be better?

NATO is dominated by US, which means the barmy Trump.

A friend of Putin, not a friend of European democracy.

An unreliable ally who is not committed to the defence of Europe.

We are Europeans.

We cannot depend of a fickle semi-detached supporter.

If US takes three years to join us, as usual, while a war rages on, there will not be much left.

See the difference?

Trump has drove a wedge in between the US NATO. Nobody disputes the US is unreliable whilst he is in control. He won't be in charge for too long so why break up NATO in favour for a european army? The security tthat the US brings to NATO as a deterrent to Putin etc is more important than dropping them as an ally

I haven't seen anybody recommend that Europe "drops US as an ally."

But that we cannot rely on them and should not allow them to dominate and control our defence organisations.

I'm amused to see you think that Trump deters his buddy Putin.

However Trump did his best to deter Ukraine, and tried to pressure them into surrendering their land, sovereignty and armed forces.

FCAS, a joint European project with France, Germany and 2 others to produce a 6th generation fighter jet has been scrapped over lack of agreement between between the main partners.

GCAP, an agreement between UK, Japan and Italy to produce a 6th generation fighter by 2035 is on the verge of collapse seemingly because of lack of financial commitment by the UK, despite a treaty having been signed.

The long overdue UK DIP (defence investment plan) might be brought out ahead of the next NATO meeting. Some think it's been delayed simply because there is no money.

Oh well, we'll have to rely on America then.
