I always thought that there was a set limit on giving gifts and then you would get taxed.

You may be thinking of inheritance tax. If it’s over a certain amount and the person that gifts it dies within 7 years. It’s a sliding scale too 40% within 2 years reducing to 10% in year 7 or something like that.

Which is why that you should have a signed agreement in place with family that if you won the lottery
