Two way lighting not working

Not possible, they likely pulled out when you removed switch View attachment 418388 there must be three connections for two way switching to work.

Sorry the picture not as intended, the at moment empty terminal will have the unused wire either red or black from two core, and the blue from three core.
Those wires that are wrapped with electrical tape were not connected to the switch ,still 3 wires in the switch do the others were obviously not required

Have it your own way, but it will not work.
The blue and black were wrapped in electrical tape and were never connected to the switch, there are still 3 wires in the switch and there 3 wires in the downstairs switch

In your picture above ,post no.8,( with the 2 red and 1 yellow wires connecting to a new switch) check the wire going to the com terminal.
Did you miss my above post ? I can't tell from the picture, it's not clear enough, but the wire appears to go where the screw is ??

I have changed loads of switches and sockets never had an issue before
I have changed lots of stuff too (gas engineer) and have easliy got distracted or whatever and when confirmed voltage it hasnt been correct.

As Eric has tried to tell you these wires were in a terminal before you removed the faceplate of that switch. Perhaps the screw wasn't tight but they were in the terminal and they were making a connection.
