I think they almost most certainly will and their military has been ramping up in the past decade to do this. Now they see an easy battle from the disaster of 1982.

Worryingly they have just aquired 3 X P3 Orion intelligence gathering aircraft from Norway which have been actively gathering intelligence in the skies surrounding the Falklands,. They also know we have nothing in reserve to send out there like we did in 19982. Today the feeling in Argentina with regards to the Falklands is the same as it was in 1981. We saw this in the world cup fiasco.

I doubt it. A mate, who's a politcal scientist of sorts in US, made an interesting point - if they had waited, we might well have given it up, as we were giving up small distant patches at the time - Zimbabwe (1980), Vanuatu (1980), Belize (1981), and Antigua and Barbuda (1981).

And the UK and Argentina signed a 1968 memorandum aiming to recognise Argentine sovereignty, subject to future safeguards.

But, with military spending on the rise in the UK, they might have missed the boat already ...

It would be difficult to take them but even harder for us to get them back if they did. All analysts are suggesting March 2028 when they will try, if they try.

"Margaret Thatcher's government offered to hand over sovereignty of the Falkland islands at a clandestine meeting with a senior Argentinian official less than two years before the invasion of the British territory, it is revealed today.

Colleagues of the British minister involved set up a diversionary cover story to explain his absence, saying he was off to Switzerland to do a little painting with his wife.

The secret meeting is disclosed in the official history of the Falklands by Sir Lawrence Freedman, professor of war studies at King's College, University of London.

He reveals that in June 1980, the Foreign Office drew up a proposal, approved by the cabinet's defence committee, whereby Britain would hand Argentina titular sovereignty over the islands, which would then be leased back by Britain for 99 years"

IIRC, Thatcher reportedly said years later that defending the Falklands was "never about the Falklands", but showing the Russians that we weren't there for the taking.

But someone else can support or refute that, as they wish.
